The Significance of Ruffled Dresses

Nowadays, a lot of women love to wear ruffled dresses regardless of the style that preferred with. It comes in various designs and concepts. As such, the ruffle collar combined with bandeau style bodice, ruffle hemline and cuffs in long sleeve motif, and the very famous princess cut with ruffle top design.

How do ruffle dress started?

Ruffle dresses and top started way back 15th-16th centuries. Mostly used by patriarch, Royal families and prominent people during that era. They used this as an additional clothing of the shirt to the neck or anywhere on the chemise and typically term as the ruff. It is also famous during the time of Queen Elizabeth of which becomes more elaborate and colourful. Together with the discovery of vegetable dyes, using starch for stand-out effect and smalt for a variety of colours.

Thereon, different designs were discovered and innovation occurs from time to time. Then, gradually changes into something more innovative. 

Ruffles can be in various terms such as frill, furbelow, flounce and trimmings. All those are related to each other but somehow different in patterns and styling of the dress or chemise.

A frill can be topped off to the dress on the neckline and hemline. It could also wrap up along the empire waist and all over the bodice, depends on the designer or seamstresses.

Today, ruffles are designed individually and characterize categorically, in accordance of numbers of pleats. Generally, the more flounces the dress has, the less accessories accentuated with. This is to neutralise the entity of the frock and would also look beautiful that highlights the frill itself.
